Jai Opetaia upsets Mairis Briedis in SHOCKER to win IBF cruiserweight title

Jai Opetaia the 2012 Olympian from Sydney did not let a damaged jaw deter him from victory. Opetaia upset former title holder Mairis Briedis via unanimous decision in a brutal and bloody fight Saturday in Broad Beach, Australia. The scores were 116-112, 116-112 and 115-113, all in favor of Opetaia who now improves his record to 22-0, 17 KOs. Jai Opetaia controlled the fight with his southpaw jab and straight lefts that Briedis was incapable of avoiding. Mairis Briedis, now 28-2, 20 KOs, also landed his share of heavy blows to inflict plenty of damage on his opponent, reports say he broke Opetaia’s jaw. But Jai Opetaia kept the pace and scored enough points to secure the unanimous decision and become the first Aussie to win a world title on home soil since Jeff Horn won a robbery victory over legend Manny Pacquiao in 2017.
